 Course Spotlight

Courses in the Department of Natural Resources Conservation integrate lectures with field studies. Field trips to research sites allow students to gain hands on experience.

During a recent Fish Ecology class, Professor Francis Juanes, brought students to the Holyoke Dam to learn about anadromous fish and their ability to coexist with man-made dams. "Unbelievably, it was the first day of the season that the fish lift was in operation and although we were informed that the we shouldn’t expect to see any anadromous fish passing (never mind the chance of witnessing an Atlantic salmon) due to how early in the year it was and the raging water. Well, if I didn’t already give it away…to the suprise of everyone working at the fishway and to the class; as we entered the viewing room someone yelled out "Salmon"!! So for the first time in the fishway’s history a large adult Atlantic salmon passed the holyoke dam on the first day of operation." (PhD student, David Stormer)
